方鈉石為相對堅硬但易脆的礦物，而其蘇打石名稱來源是因為成分含有鈉。在礦物學中蘇打是被歸類為似長石礦物，而在顏色上藍色的方鈉石較為人知，不過也有其他顏色的方鈉石，如灰、黃、綠、粉紅等顏色。
即使藍色方鈉石外觀和青金石相似，但是方鈉石很少跟黃鐵礦共生，顏色上偏向皇室藍，而非群青色，再者也可以透過條痕的顏色不同來做區分。
Sodalite is a relatively hard but brittle mineral, and its name comes from the sodium content of sodaite. In mineralogy, soda is classified as a feldspar-like mineral, and blue soda is better known in color, but there are other colors of soda, such as gray, yellow, green, and pink.
Even though the appearance of blue sodalite is similar to lapis lazuli, sodalite seldom co-exists with pyrite, and the color tends to be royal blue rather than ultramarine blue, and it can also be distinguished by the color of the streaks.
